Hydeia Broadbent’s story began at birth when she was abandoned at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where Patricia and Loren Broadbent would later adopt her as an infant. Although her HIV condition was congenital, she was not diagnosed as HIV-positive with advancement to AIDS until the age three. Doctors said she would not live past the of five. Hydeia is now 26 and adamantly committed to spreading the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, by: promoting abstinence, safe-sex practices (for people who choose to have sex), and the initiative “Knowing Your HIV/AIDS Status.”

I am the Deputy Finance Director and Philanthropy Consultant for Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Booker Team for Newark. I was raised by Chief Warrant Officer David T. Hall, Jr., my maternal grandfather. To me, my grandfather was born in a free world with limitless possibilities, but for him this world came with boundaries. He shared his world with me through vivid stories of his service as an infantry soldier in the segregated United States Army. Through his stories, I learned that he suffered more from battles on American soil than he ever did in wars overseas. Although his ebony-hued skin failed and dehumanized him by law, he was proud of his country.

A New York transplant from Tennessee and the visionary behind Harlem’s Fashion Row, Brandice Henderson’s dream is one that has truly become a reality.
In 2007 Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR), created to bring awareness and visibility to the existing community of talented minority designers, was just an idea. It was an idea to provide a platform for those designers who, otherwise, might not have the opportunity to showcase their collections during Fashion Week. Within that same year, with no resources, sponsorship and limited experience, Brandice turned her idea into a business. Originally established as a one time fashion show, HFR has grown into a team of 30 fashion volunteers which have, over the past four years, helped show the collections of over 12 designers of color. Managing each HFR production from start to finish, Henderson has established herself as a fashion event expert.
